I find it immensely impossible to actually pick a favorite. I like each and every character and I believe they all hold an importance to the story.
Of course, I like Frodo a lot. While some people claim him to be annoying I’d have to firmly disagree. He might come across as weak at times but I think anyone would be if they were placed in his shoes. He traveled thousands of miles away from the only place he truly knew in order to destroy a ring. A ring that corrupts the mind and temps you towards evil. It was such a burden to placed on anyone. He holds a bravery inside of him that makes him a real hero. And while the ring tore him apart he still held on strong and fought it off as best as he could until the end.
And of course Samwise. The humble gardener who sticks by Frodo’s side through the good and the bad. Like most of the true friend characters in these type of story’s he’s not a sidekick. He’s a hero just like Frodo himself. The ring would have never been destroyed if the two hadn’t of had each other. Even when Frodo cast him away he still stuck by his side and followed him. It’s impossible not to love his character.
I also love Smeagol. I don’t consider him to be a bad guy really. His story is actually quite tragic. The moment he lay eyes on the ring it fully corrupted his brain. He killed for it, spent hundreds of years hidden alone in the dark for it, and when he lost it he spent years only thinking of that ring. And in the two towers he was in a constant battle with himself between good and evil. But the fight couldn’t be won and the evil took hold of him. He couldn’t live without the ring. He needed it. It was rotting away his brain at each fraction of a second.
But as I said, it is impossible to pick a favorite. I could spend hours sitting here and talking about each character and how much I admire them. But I won’t. I’ll leave you with this, anon.
